چکیده

Prel iminary results of tbe measurements of the electroQ and ion components of plasma obtained by means of wide-angle detectors onboard the Venera-9 and Venera-l0 satell ites are presented. Stable electron and fluctuating ion fluxes were detected in the optical and corpuscular umbra. As a result of the plasma characteristics ob served at a few hundred kilometers above the optical umbra, we refer to this region as corpuscular penumbra. By means of a number of bow shock crossings, we analyzed its structure which turned out to be variable with time. The relatively small fluctuations of the bow shock crossing positions and grouping of corresponding shocks near the planet suggest the nonmagnetic nature of the Venus obstacle.

Mariner V: Plasma and Magnetic Fields Observed near Venus.

Abrupt changes in the amplitude of the magnetic fluctuations, in the field strength, and in the plasma properties, were observed with Mariner V near Venus. They provide clear evidence for the presence of a bow shock around the planet, similar to, but much smaller than, that observed at Earth. The observations appear consistent with an interaction of the solar wind with the ionosphere of Venus. ...

Pioneer Venus Orbiter observations of a solar wind quasi-invariant

The recently suggested solar wind quasi-invariant [ QI ≡ (B/8π)/(ρv/2)] is a combination of magnetic field strength B, plasma density ρ and solar wind speed v. Measured in the solar wind near the Earth, the median value of QI was shown to be a reliable index of solar activity for the 28 year period holding a linear relation with sunspot numbers (SSN) with a high correlation coefficient (cc) of ...

Modeling of Venus, Mars, and Titan

Increased computer capacity has made it possible to model the global plasma and neutral dynamics near Venus, Mars and Saturn’s moon Titan. The plasma interactions at Venus, Mars, and Titan are similar because each possess a substantial atmosphere but lacks a global internally generated magnetic field. In this article three self-consistent plasma models are described: the magnetohydrodynamic (MH...
